Mothercare operates as a retailer with products aimed specifically at expectant mothers, babies and young children. The first store was opened in Surrey in 1961 by Selim Zilkha and Sir James Goldsmith. The company was originally focused on nursery furniture, pushchairs and maternity clothing, but began to expand into clothing for children up to five, and subsequently children up to age eight. The company now sells a huge variety of maternity and childcare products, from home furnishings and feeding equipment to toys and maternity wear.

In 1962, Mothercare initiated its mail order business, and in 1972 it had had enough success to become a public company. Mothercare merged with Habitat in 1982 to create Habitat Mothercare plc, and in 1986 merged with British Home Stores. It was rationalised during the 1990s, and in 2000 Mothercare became Mothercare plc as the sole brand. The group took on the Early Learning Centre (ELC) brand in June 2007 for £85 million.

Mothercare operates its retail online, on the high street and on the outskirts of town. It now has more than 1060 stores worldwide, with nearly 400 of those in the UK.

The three brands of the Mothercare plc are: Mothercare, Early Learning Centre and Gurgle.com which was launched in 2007 as a social networking site for new parents.
